Parenting with Insight: 8 Books to Cultivate Self-Awareness
Today, I wanted to share some of my favourite books for developing self-awareness as a parent. Self-awareness is an essential skill for helping us understand how we think, feel, and act. This set of books isn't a comprehensive review, but it may invite curiosity about developing greater self-awareness.
The Yes Brain by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson - This bestseller is one of my favourites. Authors give practical strategies while emphasising the act of observation.
Parenting from the Inside Out by Daniel J. Siegel and Mary Hartzell - I highly recommend reading more than one book by Dr. Dan Siegel because it will help you form a deeper understanding of interpersonal neuroscience and how to develop self-awareness.
Five Deep Breaths: The Power of Mindful Parenting by Genevieve Von Lob - This book is a simple guide for learning how to observe what's going on inside us.
Self Awareness (HBR Emotional Intelligence Series) by Daniel Coleman, Robert Steven Kaplan, and Susan David - An introduction to self-awareness and how to cultivate it.
Mindful Parenting: Finding Space To Be - In a World of To Do by Susan Bogels - Susan Bögels previously published on the Mindful Parenting method. And now she has a brand new self-help book for parents.
Self-Compassion for Parents: Nurture Your Child by Caring for Yourself by Susan M. Pollak - This book highlights the importance of self-care and more importantly self-compassion.
Indistractable by Nir Eyal - This book may seem a little out of place, but not entirely. Author Nir Eyal raises an interesting point about technology use. This book may help you reflect on your tech use and whether it get's in the way of you showing up for things that matter (e.g., kids, family).
Parenting in the Present Moment: How to Stay Focused on What Really Matters by Carla Naumburg - This book is all about noticing what is going on with your child and yourself and how to develop self-awareness as a parent.
